PARISH EVENT - NEW TRANSLATION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL PRESENTATIONS

And With Your Spirit

As was announced last spring, the upcoming season of Advent will not only begin a new church year, but we will experience the advent of a newly revised translation of the Mass.

For centuries, the Order of the Mass was celebrated in Latin. The book was called the Latin Missal. It was the official prayer book for Mass for the worldwide Catholic Church.

Since the 1970’s there have been two major editions of the English translation of the Mass. On the first Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, the Church will begin the use of a third translation. This translation conforms more literally to the Latin language. And in that light, the mass book which is now the Sacramentary will be titled the Roman Missal.

An example of being closer to Latin in the Mass:

Latin: Dominus vobiscum - “The Lord be with you”. A literal translation will stay the same.

Latin: Et cum spiritu tuo - “And with your spirit”, will replace the more familiar “And also with you.”

We titled this page “And With Your Spirit” for us as a praying community united in the Holy Eucharist to study together and renew our spirit of awareness of the mysteries of faith we express at Mass.

Note: This is a new translation of the Mass, not a new ritual for celebrating the Eucharist.

In the next few weeks, on this “And With Your Spirit” page we will take up questions and explain the changes in parts of the Mass that the priest says and the parts of the Mass that we say. There will also be new mass music settings for the parts of the mass that we sing. These new arrangements will be introduced and practiced BEFORE Mass and as preludes to worship.

Below is a schedule of presentations and preludes leading to the introduction to:
