Sacraments - Faith Formation - Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)
The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process designed for adults who are coming to the Catholic faith from another faith tradition, have been baptized in the Catholic faith, but have not received any other Sacraments, or have not been baptized in any particular faith tradition.

The RCIA process allows you to journey through the full liturgical year and the timeline can vary from person to person as to the readiness of reception of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil.

RCIA provides a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for adults to learn about our Catholic faith, theology, rituals and practices. Sessions are weekly beginning in September and concluding a few weeks after Easter. Meetings are on Mondays at 7 pm in the Parish Center.

The process includes:

"The people of God, as represented by the local Church should understand that the initiation of adults is the responsibilty of all the baptised." Christian Initiation #7. Therefore we invite all interested adults to join the Wednesday evening sessions from 7:15 to 9 pm to learn more about their faith tradition and share with the candidates.

Sacraments

7 Outward (visible) Signs that the Church uses to celebrate God's sharing of life with us.

  • Baptism - Admits the person to life in the Church.
  • Confirmation - Commissions the person to Christian Action.
  • Holy Eucharist - Central Worship of the Church to which the other sacraments point.

Catechumen

One who is seeking Baptism and Full Initiation into the Church.

Candidate

A baptized Christian who wishes to join in Full Communion (Membership) in the Roman Catholic Church.

Candidate for Ongoing Conversion

A baptized Catholic who was not completed his/her intial sacraments.

Catechist

One who shares in the instruction of the Catholic Faith and Culture.

Godparent

A baptized, active Catholic who stands and witnesses to the faith of the one being baptized.

Sponsor

A baptized, active Catholic who knows the Candidate / Catechumen and is willing to companion them in the process of preparing for sacraments.

Inquiry

Informal Sessions where people "Come and See" and meet and greet.

Catechumenate

Persons have publicly stated their intention to prepare for initiation and engage in learning sessions and studies, celebrated by the Rite of Acceptance.

Purification and Enlightenment - LENT

Attention to deeper spiritual preparation. Celebrated by the Rite of Sending - Special blessing of candidates as they go to the Cathedral for welcome, and the Rite of the Elect - Celebration at the Cathedral with the Bishop who formally welcomes the candidates to membership in the Church.
