Christifideles and Bishop Quarter Awards

October 2, 2022

On Sunday, October 2, 2022, two women from our newly formed St. Catherine of Siena – St. Lucy and St. Giles Parish were recognized by Cardinal Cupich with awards.

Maria Samatas was given the 2022 Christifideles Award. This is bestowed upon a layperson who demonstrates responsibility and service for the Church’s life on the parish level. Maria was given the award for her service organizing our parish hospitality weekends and for engaging our parishioners during our Wednesday evening bible study sessions.

Connie Rakitan was awarded with the 2022 Bishop Quarter Award. Bishop William Quarter was the first bishop of Chicago. This award is bestowed upon an individual who demonstrates consistent service to ministry in the Vicariate and the Archdiocese of Chicago. Connie was given the award because of her long-time ministry in Religious Education and SPRED, as well as forming the ministry of Faith and Fellowship in service to those with mental illness, both at the parish level and throughout the Archdiocese. There is one such award made in each Vicariate. We are a part of Vicariate IV, and Connie received the award in recognition of her service for our entire Vicariate.

Congratulations to Maria and Connie for their dedication and service to the church, especially to our newly formed parish!

With our blessings,
Fr. Carl, and our entire faith community!

With Gratitude and Joy from Connie Rakitan – To receive the Bishop Quarter Award for Vicariate IV was an honor to not only me but to our community. I am grateful to Fr. Carl for nominating me, to Bishop Birmingham for choosing me, and to this parish where lay people have the opportunity to give meaningful service. During the presentation ceremony, I felt the presence of so many people who over the years have been and still are such a beautiful part of my life in the Church. My heart is filled with warm joy when I realize that this award is, in fact, for all of us. Thank you, and God bless.
