Bulletin Article from Father Carl Morello

We had a beautiful Celebration of Life for Father Thomas M. Dore, Pastor Emeritus of Saint Giles. Father Tom Dore served here for fifteen years and, after retiring, handed over the reigns of leadership to me. It has been a privilege and joy for me to carry on, and build upon, this vibrant, strong community of faith that Father Dore loved and served. Cardinal Cupich celebrated Father Dore’s Mass. I know Tom would have been pleased to have his over fifty years of service as a priest in our Archdiocese recognized in such a joyful way. To gather at the Table of the Lord, where Father Dore so frequently offered Mass, together with his family, many friends and people whose lives he touched was a meaningful way to remember and celebrate his life. It was a life richly lived here on earth and now, we trust in faith, rewarded with the promise of eternal life in heaven. May his soul rest in peace!

The past eighteen months of the pandemic have tested our patience and good humor. Tempers have become shorter and tolerance limited. Yet followers of Jesus know that it is critical to demonstrate our love for God in our daily treatment of others. We are asked to show as much patience with others as God has with us. One way we can do so is to fight against our own shortcomings. Certainly it can be frustrating when the faults and mistakes of others disrupt the routine of our lives. In fairness, our own faults disrupt theirs as well. So, instead of noting and resenting the weaknesses of our neighbors, we can focus on improving our own.

This was often a theme of Father Dore’s in his preaching and in the spiritual guidance he would offer to others. And, most of all, it is something he practiced in his own life. He was very self-aware which led him to be compassionate, patient and forgiving. One of the best ways to honor him and his ministry as a priest is to remember this beautiful lesson and try our best, with the help of God, to focus always on improving ourselves.

With you a Christian. For you a priest.
