Lenten Books for Reflection and Discussion

Field of Compassion, by Judy Cannato

Field of Compassion continues the exploration of science, religion, and spirituality that Cannato began in her first book, Radical Amazement. Cannato dives deep into the spirituality of Jesus’ vision of the Kingdom of God, viewing it through the lens of contemporary scientific discoveries. Through thoughtful reflections she explores how all creation is connected, and calls us to transformation, compassion and collaboration.

Barking to the Choir, by Gregory Boyle

Last year, many at St. Giles read and were touched by Gregory Boyle’s book, Tattoos on the Heart. In this follow-up to last year’s book, he explores how compassion can transform lives. How can we encounter God in the margins and see the presence of Christ in each person? “This book is guaranteed to shake up our ideas about God and about people with a glimpse at a world defined by more compassion and fewer barriers. Gently and humorously, Barking to the Choir invites us to find kinship with one another and reconvinces us all of our own goodness.”

The Soul of a Pilgrim: Eight Practices for the Journey Within, by Christine Valters Paintner

This book is an invitation to an inner pilgrimage and a spiritual journey that challenges the reader to live more simply and to discover the hidden presence of God. Scripture stories and creative practices of prayer, writing and photography accompany the pilgrim through the eight stages of the journey from hearing the call to coming home. This book is ideal for those who are looking for a contemplative, retreat-like experience for the season of Lent.
