Appalachia Service Project 2008!

The Appalachia Service Project (ASP) is the annual service trip taken to the Central Appalachian region to construct and repair homes for families in need, while building relationships with the people and community we serve. Although the trip is taken during the summer, being a part of ASP requires monthly commitments beginning in November 2007.

There are so many benefits and rewards to participating in ASP: you help in building the Kingdom on earth, learn a lot about yourself and others, build an amazing community, grow in your faith, laugh, cry, serve others, stretch your comfort zone, experience a new culture, learn new skills, and have tons of fun.

Participants should also expect a lot of hard work and dedication. Participation in all formation meetings, fundraising efforts, local service projects, and the skills-building/safety training are manditory. We also expect the highest level of responsible, mature, and engaged participation at all times.

WHAT IS ASP?

ASP stands for Appalachia Service Project, and is the summer service trip attended by St. Giles high school students and adults since 2000. Since 1969, ASP, a nonprofit, Christian ministry headquartered in Johnson City, TN, has facilitated the ministries of dedicated volunteers and staff through programs of home repair, major housing rehabilitation, and new home construction, as well as engaging in relational ministry with the people of Appalachia. All projects are done at no charge to the recipients. Young people and their group leaders come from all over the country during an 8 week time span each summer (and at other times during the year) to be a part of this ministry, staying at one of ASP's 25 summer housing centers.

You can also learn more about the Appalachian Service Project by visiting their website at www.asphome.org

WHO CAN GO?

The ASP service trip at St. Giles is open to all high school students. You may apply during your freshman through senior year, and the trip takes place the following summer. Although the trip is taken during the summer, being a part of ASP is a year-long commitment!

Adult leaders are also a vital part of the ASP service project! No previous construction experience is required (although this is a gift we always need and welcome!) but adults must work well with teenagers, be willing to complete a background check and attend a VIRTUS workshop on preventing child abuse, and be committed to faith-based service.
