Celebration of “El Cristo Negro de Esquipulas”

January 14, 2024

On Sunday, January 14, 2024, the Family Mass Community of St. Catherine-St. Lucy and St. Giles celebrated and honored “El Cristo Negro de Esquipulas” – It is a darkened wooden cross greatly revered and loved in Guatemala and other Latin American countries.

In the 70’s after the democratic government was removed from Guatemala, a handful of members of the Family Mass Community hosted several people from that country. We have heard their stories of being chased through the jungle taking very little with them. The numbers have increased over the last 40 years into a vibrant and amazing part of the Family Mass Community. Children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren have become members of several committees, received sacraments, provided music, and blessed our church. They have started businesses and are working so hard to assimilate with us.
