Spirit and Light Collaborative
Middle School Ministry and Family Religious Education

January and February 2024

Middle School Ministry – The 7th and 8th grade students in Middle School Ministry learned about Biblical prophets in January. For their at-home activity, they created a poster or brochure about someone they consider to be a modern prophet.

Their first session in February focused on Lent and the practice of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The students made a Lenten Calendar where they wrote what they were going to do for each day while they talked at their tables about the significance of this special liturgical season.

Family Religious Education – Family RE continues to cover a lot of ground this year, from contemplating the big questions of existence to modeling simple gestures for our kids in the spirit of St. Therese’s “Little Way.” Our break-out sessions might find the parents asking why there is order from chaos or anything at all, while the young ones practice substituting pretzels for suckers as a simple act of Lenten sacrifice.

In past sessions, our kids got their hands dirty making prayer stones and stained glass, while the parents received introductions to Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina.

Our families were able to walk the Advent Garden and sit quietly together, listening to the music of Arvo Part. With two sessions remaining, we look forward to continuing our exploration of our wide and varied Catholic traditions.
