In addition to formation within the Religious Education programs and the School, in past years, preparation for First Reconciliation has consisted of a gathering for parents only to engage in meaningful conversation about issues of faith, and one retreat for parents and children to experience together. This preparation process typically begins at the start of their second grade year. Two opportunities to celebrate First Reconciliation are offered in January.
Preparation for First Eucharist or First Communion has followed a similar format. In conjunction with these gatherings, ongoing formation opportunities are designed to deepen both the parent and child understanding of the Sacrament of Eucharist as well as enabling parents to guide their child into gaining greater understanding and meaning of the Eucharist in their daily lives. Multiple opportunities to celebrate First Communion are offered in the Spring.
Current circumstances related to the Covid-19 virus will not permit us to move forward with in-person gatherings for preparation as we have in the past, but families of eligible students will be invited to register for At Home Sacrament Preparation in September 2020 with preparation materials distributed to parents in October or November for both sacraments. We will modify our in-person sacrament celebrations in accordance with public health policy.
