Campus Facilities Updates from Our Parish Operations Director, Matt Brophy

July 2023

A part of Parish Operations is facility management, maintenance, and repair. St. Catherine of Siena-St. Lucy and St. Giles Parish has one Facilities Committee made up of members of both church worship sites.

St. Catherine-St. Lucy Campus Facility Updates


RECTORY

  • Basement sanitized and cleaned after the flood.
  • Damaged drywall removed from the basement.
  • Replacement sump pumps ordered. Insurance will cover the cost of the new industrial sump pumps.
  • New boiler to be installed once the sump pump installation is completed. The cost will also be covered by the Archdiocese.

CHURCH

  • Roofing contract signed to repair all level elevation roofs: sacristy, chapel, music room, former baptistery. Work to be scheduled asap.
  • Repair work on all down spouts, gutters, and scuppers included in roofing contract.
  • Replacement sump pumps ordered. Insurance will cover the cost of the new industrial sump pumps.

PARKING LOTS – Repaving the parking lot between Maguire Hall and Rectory is scheduled for Thursday, August 3 through Friday, August 4.

  • Repaving the asphalt area between Sister House, School, and Church.
  • Repair and patch the Chicago parking lot on Austin and Washington.
  • Additional handicapped spaces will be added to the parking lot when it is stripped.

St. Giles Campus Facility Updates


There are about 8 weeks in the summer to tackle campus projects. The following projects are in process or have been completed.

FRAWLEY BUILDING -1034 LINDEN

  • Replacement of a vacuum condensate pumps for the boilers.
  • Painting – boys bathroom, east hallway and two classrooms.
  • Plumbing – Install a back flow valve system as required by code – Re-pipe all hot and cold-water feeds in the basement which were original from 1928 – Install individual shut off valves for the Church, Rectory and Frawley Buildings.

CORRIGAN BUILDING – 1030 LINDEN

  • Repaired and installed new and more secure door hardware for wooden doors.
  • Repaired and replastered the Linden entrance.
  • Painted 4 classrooms.
  • Rehabbed the band room behind the stage- painted and repaired walls and floors.
  • Rehabbed the rest rooms in the band room with new commode, sinks and dispensary.
  • Playground asphalt ground and new asphalt laid – funded by a grant.
  • Playground installation of rubber cycle soft surface material over the rubber mulch.
  • Catch basins cleaned and 300 gallons of rubber mulch removed from basin.

GLEESON BUILDING – 1101 COLUMBIAN

  • Installation of drain tile and pumps in the basement to eliminate flood and mold.
  • New fencing for the playground will be installed in early August.
  • Possible soft surface rubber cycle material to be added to the playlot.
  • Carpets cleaned throughout the first and second floor including McDonough Hall.

MAIN PARKING LOT

  • Tree trimming and weed removal along the alley.
  • Old fencing removed and new fencing to be installed – funded by the PTO.
  • Benches to be added to the area.

RECTORY

  • Replacement of 15 windows which have been ordered and will be installed before the fall.
  • Replacement of cold-water feed line from the basement of the Rectory into the basement of the Church.
  • Repairs to the masonry wall behind the Rectory.

Photo above – Vacuum and Condensate pump for boilers that pulls steam back from Church, Rectory, Frawley and Corrigan Buildings. The pump helps the boilers maintain even amount of steam throughout the campus heating system.

CAMPUS PROJECT

  • Replacement of the phone system for the entire campus (The current system is Toshiba which is no longer in the phone business).
  • Installation of cloud-based phone system which will begin the week of August 7.
  • Replacement and installation of new server for the Parish offices and Rectory.
